Update Your BMW & MINI Navigation — Full Tutorial

Updating your BMW or MINI navigation is a simple do-it-yourself job — no dealer visit, no special tools. This tutorial covers the full route: preparing your USB on Mac or Windows, using the right port in the car, and entering your FSC code. Most owners finish in under an hour.
What you’ll need: your map files (from your order email), a USB drive — FAT32, 64GB or smaller (16GB USB 2.0 for Move/Motion), your 20-digit FSC code, and your car. First time? Identify your system first (2 min).
Free tools you’ll need:
- Windows — format USB to FAT32: FAT32 Format GUI (needed for drives over 32GB, which Windows won’t format to FAT32 on its own).
- Windows — extract map files: WinRAR.
- Mac — extract map files: The Unarchiver (free, App Store).
- Mac only — remove hidden files: BlueHarvest. macOS creates hidden files that can stop the car reading the drive — clean them before ejecting.
Part 1 — Prepare the USB drive
Most failed updates come down to two things: the wrong USB format, or files in the wrong place. Get these two right and the rest is easy.
On Windows
Download & extract. Open your order email link, download, then right-click → Extract with WinRAR (enter the supplied password).
Format to FAT32. Right-click the USB → Format → FAT32. If 64GB drives only show exFAT/NTFS, use a free FAT32 formatting tool — FAT32 is required.
Copy files to the root — the files inside the extracted folder, per FIG 1. Safely eject.
On Mac
Format via Disk Utility: select the drive → Erase → format MS-DOS (FAT), scheme Master Boot Record.
Copy files to the root, then clean hidden files with BlueHarvest — macOS leaves invisible "ghost" files that stop the car reading the drive. This is the step most guides miss.

Part 3 — Install in the car
Insert the USB into the correct port with the ignition on (keep the engine running for longer installs).
Within ~20 seconds iDrive detects the update — select Start update.
Enter your 20-digit FSC code from your order email. Watch for 0/O and 1/I mix-ups.
Confirm and wait 30–40 minutes. You can drive during the update; navigation keeps working.
Leave the USB in until the system reboots automatically — done. Test a quick route.
