How BMW & MINI Navigation Systems Work
Head unit + map data + FSC code — understand the three parts and every update, code and region question makes sense.
Every BMW & MINI navigation setup is three parts working together: the head unit in your dash, the map data stored on it, and the FSC code that licenses that data to your car. Understand these three and everything else — updates, codes, regions — makes sense.
The head unit — which system is in your car
BMW & MINI have used several generations of navigation hardware since 2004. Each shows a different word in its map name — that word is how you identify it:
| Map name word | System | Years (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| MOTION | CCC | 2004–2009 |
| MOVE / PREMIUM | CIC Business / CIC Pro | 2009–2012 |
| ROUTE | EntryNav (CHAMP2) | 2012–2017 |
| NEXT | NBT | 2013–2016 |
| EVO | NBT EVO ID4 / ID5-6 | 2016–2020 |
| WAY | EntryNav2 | 2018+ |
| LIVE / JOY | MGU (iDrive 7/8) | 2018+ |

The map data — region-specific, updated 1–2× a year
Maps are released per region (Europe, North America, Middle East and 14 more) once or twice a year. New releases add roads, speed cameras, roundabouts and points of interest. Your car only accepts maps for its licensed region — details in the regions guide.
The FSC code — the license that unlocks it
Map data alone won’t install. Your car asks for a 20-digit FSC code, cryptographically matched to your VIN, proving the map is licensed for that exact vehicle. One-Time codes unlock a single release; Lifetime codes cover every future release. Full detail in FSC codes explained.

Frequently asked questions
Is my BMW or MINI covered?
If it has factory navigation and is from 2010 onwards, yes — every system from CIC to the latest MGU. Rolls-Royce models run the same iDrive systems and are supported too.
Does a map update change any car features?
No — it only refreshes the map data. Software, features and settings stay exactly as they are.
How often should I update?
Maps release once or twice a year per region. Most owners update yearly; a Lifetime FSC makes every future update code-free.
