Three things decide compatibility
Your head unit
CarPlay only exists on NBT EVO and newer. NBT (NEXT) and EntryNav (ROUTE) can never run it.
A WiFi / WLAN antenna
Every compatible unit needs a factory WiFi antenna, or at least the WLAN port so activation can work.
The right firmware
A compatible unit may still need a firmware update before CarPlay — or before full-screen — can be switched on.

EntryNav2 owners — check this first. Open NAV → Options → Navigation System Version. Your screen must read WAY (for example Road Map EUROPE WAY 2026-1). If it reads ROUTE, that is the original EntryNav and CarPlay is not possible on it. The unit must also have a physical WLAN port on the back — if you cannot tell, send us your VIN and we will confirm free before you order. Full-screen CarPlay on EntryNav2 needs firmware 07-20 or newer (the code is a date, so 07-20 means July 2020).
About the Wi-Fi antenna. Wireless CarPlay carries its data over the car’s Wi-Fi, and a factory antenna gives the strongest link. It does not decide whether your car is compatible and it is not needed for the activation itself — it can be fitted at any time afterwards for a more solid connection.
To confirm the family, open Navigation → Option → Version and read the map word: NEXT=NBT, ROUTE=EntryNav, EVO=NBT EVO, WAY=EntryNav2, LIVE/JOY=MGU. Full steps in the system guide.
How activation works — and which firmware needs what
For NBT EVO ID5/6 the method depends on your firmware letter. For EntryNav2 (WAY) the head unit must have a WLAN port and you activate with your own ENET cable.
USB activation
The simplest route — plug-and-play, no laptop. Available on NBT EVO systems running these firmwares:
USB method: firmware H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O — you prepare a FAT32 stick on your computer
ENET activation
Required on NBT EVO firmware P–X, where factory security blocks USB coding, and on every EntryNav2 and MGU unit. A specialist codes the car remotely while you watch. You supply your own ENET cable — about £10 on Amazon or eBay.

Full-screen upgrade
Some cars show CarPlay as a small split-screen tile. On supported firmware we upgrade it to clean full screen. We always deliver full screen where the firmware allows; otherwise split screen (which then needs a firmware update).

ENET
What is an ENET cable — and where do I get one?
An ENET cable is a simple BMW coding lead: one end is the round OBD plug that goes into your car’s diagnostic socket, the other is a standard Ethernet (RJ45) plug for your laptop. It lets our guided app talk to your car to activate CarPlay or write a region-change file.
- We don’t sell it — you buy your own, once, and keep it.
- Widely available on eBay and Amazon, or any car-parts / diagnostics shop.
- Search “BMW ENET OBD cable” — typically around £10.
- You’ll also need a Windows laptop, internet, and a FAT32 USB (≤64GB) for some jobs.
