Format a USB to FAT32 — Windows & Mac
FAT32 is mandatory for every BMW & MINI update. The correct settings on both platforms — plus the 64GB trap and the Mac ghost-file fix.
FAT32 is mandatory for every BMW & MINI map update — the car simply won’t read exFAT or NTFS drives. Here’s how to format correctly on Windows and Mac, including the two traps that catch most people: 64GB drives on Windows, and invisible ghost files on Mac.
Free tools you’ll need:
- Windows — format USB to FAT32: FAT32 Format GUI (needed for drives over 32GB, which Windows won’t format to FAT32 on its own).
- Windows — extract map files: WinRAR.
- Mac — extract map files: The Unarchiver (free, App Store).
- Mac only — remove hidden files: BlueHarvest. macOS creates hidden files that can stop the car reading the drive — clean them before ejecting.
Windows — 2 minutes
File system: FAT32. Allocation: default. Quick Format: ticked. Click Start.
64GB drive showing only exFAT/NTFS? Windows hides FAT32 for large drives — use a free FAT32 formatting tool (takes seconds). FAT32 is still required.
Mac — 3 minutes
Click Erase → Format: MS-DOS (FAT) → Scheme: Master Boot Record → Erase.
After copying your map files, run BlueHarvest on the drive to remove macOS hidden files (.DS_Store, ._ files). These invisible "ghosts" are the #1 reason Macs produce USBs the car won't read.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my BMW accept exFAT?
BMW & MINI head units only read FAT32 file systems for updates. exFAT and NTFS drives are invisible to the update process, no matter what’s on them.
Does formatting delete everything on the USB?
Yes — formatting erases the drive. Back up anything you need first, and use an empty drive for the update.
What size USB should I buy?
32GB FAT32 covers every current map. 64GB works too (format with a FAT32 tool on Windows). For Move/Motion systems specifically, use a 16GB USB 2.0 drive.
