Find your BMW & MINI Navigation version

BMW used many navigation systems from 2004 to today, and model year alone won’t tell you which one you have. Here’s the two-minute check — with a photo of each system.

Find your system

Match your screen to the photos below, or read the version screen.

Read the map word

The word before the year — NEXT, EVO, WAY… — is your system.

Order with confidence

Head to the matching update — or let us confirm from your VIN.

The universal check

On almost every BMW: Navigation (or Map) → Option → Position & Version → Version Information. You’ll see a name like Road Map Europe EVO 2026-1. The highlighted word is your navigation version.

MINI owners: your menus look different from BMW, but the same steps and the same map words apply. If your screen doesn’t match a photo exactly, use the map word — or send your VIN and we’ll confirm.

Every system, with a photo

The ID5/ID6 photo is a real screen. Compare, then jump straight to your update.

Every BMW & MINI navigation system explained

A short profile of each head unit — what it is, which cars carry it, how it activates, and whether it can run Apple CarPlay.

NBT NEXT

2013–2016

NBT — “Navigation Business Terminal” — introduced a faster processor, a crisper 8.8-inch widescreen and full 3D maps. It reads maps from a USB stick and unlocks each release with a 20-digit FSC code entered once on screen. Map word: NEXT. Fitted to F-series 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Series, X models and MINI F-series until the arrival of NBT EVO.

CIC Premium

2009–2012

CIC Professional navigation with a hard-drive map, 8.8-inch screen and the classic list-style iDrive menu. Updates load from USB in the glovebox and activate with a 20-digit FSC. Map word: PREMIUM. Common on E90/E92 3 Series, E60 5 Series, E70 X5 and E71 X6 late models, and F10/F01 early cars.

CIC Move

2009–2012

The Business-navigation variant of CIC with a smaller 6.5-inch screen but the same underlying platform. It takes its own map release — word MOVE — and needs a 16GB USB 2.0 stick for the update. Found on 1 Series, 3 Series and X1 of the period.

Entry Motion / CCC

2004–2009

The first-generation iDrive controller (CCC) and the Entry Motion navigation on early E-series cars. Some early units read maps from DVD rather than USB. Map word: MOTION. Fitted to E60/E61 5 Series, E63 6 Series, E65 7 Series, E90 3 Series and E70 X5 of the era, and R-series MINI.

EntryNav ROUTE

2012–2017

The entry-level navigation on smaller-screen F-series cars — the head unit that CarPlay cannot run on. Map word: ROUTE. Updates load from USB in the centre console with a 20-digit FSC. Do not confuse it with EntryNav2 (WAY): the two use different maps and only WAY supports CarPlay.

NBT EVO ID4

2016–2017

The first NBT EVO generation still using the list-style ID4 menu. It shares the EVO map word with ID5/ID6 but activates with a 20-digit code rather than a Lifetime FSC file. CarPlay requires a firmware update on ID4.

NBT EVO ID5 / ID6

2017–2020

The tile-based ID5 and three-panel ID6 menus on a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Map word: EVO. Activates with a Lifetime FSC file that the head unit reads automatically — nothing to type. Also supports wireless Apple CarPlay (USB method on firmware H–O, ENET on P–X, full screen from N).

EntryNav2 WAY

2018+

The second-generation entry navigation on a 6.5 or 8.8-inch screen. Map word: WAY. Activates with a Lifetime FSC file. Supports Apple CarPlay only when the head unit has a physical WLAN port; region change is an ENET job.

MGU LIVE (iDrive 7)

2018+

BMW Operating System 7 on the G-series with the “Live Cockpit” layout. Map word: LIVE. Lifetime FSC file; region change over ENET with a Windows laptop; CarPlay and Android Auto supported.

MGU JOY (iDrive 8)

2021+

BMW Operating System 8 with the curved display. Map word: JOY. Lifetime FSC file; region change over ENET; CarPlay and Android Auto supported. Also fitted to current MINI models.
